Course Description

This course is designed to study the major poetry, fiction, drama, and essays of world literature from the Ancients through the Renaissance. Emphasis is on the intellectual and moral issues in literature that unite humankind despite differences in time, place, and language. This course also emphasizes methods of library research and composition of the research paper and the paper of literary interpretation. (Note: This course partially satisfies the writing requirements outlined in the General Education Requirements. Credit is only given for LIT 2110 or LIT 2110H. Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will recognize and analyze selected examples of the major literary forms of world literature from the Ancients through the Renaissance by:
    1. identifying, and distinguishing, the major poetic forms and conventions of world literature from the Ancients through the Renaissance.
    2. identifying, and distinguishing, the major prose forms and conventions of world literature from the Ancients through the Renaissance.
  2. The student will comprehend, and evaluate the chief contributions of the major writers of world literature from the Ancients through the Renaissance by:
    1. analyzing the principal works of major world literature writers
    2. stating and explaining the principal ideas of the major world writers as they reveal the emotional, intellectual, and moral universals in literature.
    3. stating and explaining the principal literary innovations of world literature from the Ancients through the Renaissance.
    4. comparing and contrasting major world writers, their works, and their ideas from the Ancients through the Renaissance, especially as they reveal the emotional, intellectual, and moral universals in literature.
    5. recognizing and explaining the influence of previous writers upon world writers from the Ancients through the Renaissance on each other and on later writers, especially as they reveal the emotional, intellectual, and moral universals that unite mankind despite differences in time, place, and language.
  3. The student will evaluate, synthesize, and explain insights into the emotional, intellectual, and moral universals in world literature from the Ancients through the Renaissance, insights based on ideas and information from reading, class discussions, independent study, and/or research by:
    1. drawing logical inferences from study and discussion of the emotional, intellectual, and moral universals in world literature.
    2. discussing these inferences and supporting them with evidence from world literature and/or from secondary sources in an oral report and/or interpretive essays.
  4. The student will use research methods effectively by:
    1. locating sources through electronic search of library databases or the Internet.
    2. locating sources, either print or electronic, through other types of references, such as periodical and subject indexes, and general reference aids.
  5. The student will use information from sources appropriately to write a research paper and essays of literary interpretation based on the course curriculum by:
    1. taking notes from specified sources:
      1. identifying and paginating the notes correctly.
      2. using ellipses and brackets as needed.
      3. summarizing, paraphrasing, quoting, and combining these types of notes effectively.
    2. writing papers which integrate the student's own words and ideas with those of primary and/or secondary sources.
    3. employing parenthetical references throughout the paper to credit information from a primary source.
    4. applying parenthetical references correctly to credit information from secondary sources.
    5. preparing a works cited list of the sources used in the research paper.
    6. applying correct forms for parenthetical references, footnotes/endnotes and for works cited entries, according to the required form.

Criteria Performance Standard

For successful completion of the course the student will demonstrate mastery of the above stated objectives by answering correctly at least 70 % or its equivalent of the objective questions (such as multiple-choice, identification, definition, recognition of quotations, short answer) and/or the essay questions (short essays of one paragraph and/or longer multi-paragraph essays) on teacher-made tests on major writers of world literature from the Ancients through the Renaissance, their works, their ideas, and their contributions. The student will construct and effectively present an oral report, a research paper, and an essay of literary interpretation, based on independent study and research, and exhibiting the characteristics of at least Level 3 in the SPC Rubric for Speaking or Level 3 in the Analytical Rubric for Writing, respectively. The student will write an evaluated writing which must reflect at least 70% content accuracy. The writing may be on essay tests, reports, interpretive essays, research papers, personal essays, or other forms of writing. The writing will meet the criteria of at least Level 3 in the SPC Analytical Rubric for Writing.
