Course Description
This course is offered for students desiring experience in such forms as the short story, poetry, the novel, etc. and is conducted under workshop conditions. The class will discuss outstanding contemporary writers’ work as patterns and also read and analyze the student writing assignments. Each student may specialize in one literary form in a term project, as determined in conference with the instructor. This course has a substantial writing requirement.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the techniques and forms of creative writing while working with various forms by:
- writing first-person narrative.
- changing the point-of-view of a narrative.
- writing concrete, figurative, and abstract description.
- writing dialogue, narrative and possibly drama.
- writing a plot outline.
- writing a complete short story.
- writing poems in established forms of his/her choice.
- writing poems in free verse.
- developing or producing one extended manuscript throughout the course.
- The student will demonstrate the ability for self-criticism and objective evaluation of work of peers by:
- reading the work of other students in the class and criticizing this work in group discussion.
- critiquing his or her own work during the revision process.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of critical analysis in fiction and poetry by:
- reading and analyzing a minimum of six short stories.
- reading and analyzing a minimum of twelve poems.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding that the creative writer's approach is determined by variables such as material, purpose, and audience by:
- selecting his or her own subject matter.
- selecting his or her own purpose.
- considering his or her audience.
- The student will demonstrate mastery of the mechanics of the English language, acknowledging its importance to the creative writer by:
- using Standard English and its conventions where appropriate.
- revising his or her work to bring it into conformity with the accepted conventions of creative writing.
Criteria Performance Standard
1. The student will demonstrate in his or her writing the characteristics of at least Level 3 in the CLAST Descriptions of Essay Ratings.
2. The student will submit at least 2000 words of writing, all of which will be graded.
3. The student will demonstrate mastery of written English appropriate to genre.
