Course Description

In this course the student addresses advanced development of visual acuity, perception, and aesthetic sensibilities, as well as with advanced technical problems and skills. Advanced technical problems and skills include controlling various manipulative techniques obtainable through the camera, lighting and post production. Additional emphasis is placed on surveying photography’s various genres including journalism, editorial, landscape, illustrative and portrait. Course may be taken up to three times for credit.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives
  1. The student will utilize the photographic medium for both personal expression and for developing the skill sets necessary to compete in the workforce environment by:
    1. surveying various characteristic types in the photographic industry and create a body of work exemplifying a style indicative to their own.
    2. demonstrating a basic understanding of flash and other artificial lighting applications.
    3. demonstrating advanced camera technical handling through a series of assignments.
  2. The student will develop their perception and analytical capabilities through photography by:
    1. demonstrating what and how the camera observes and records versus the intention and visual objective of a photograph(s) through a body of work.
    2. analyzing the effectiveness of the meaning of images presented to the student, and through a writing assignment, discuss the visual characteristic and symbols that identify the inspiration and messaging points of the images.
    3. evaluating photographs on the basis of qualitative distinctions between images through a written essay.
  3. The student will demonstrate how to exploit the inherent power of photography as a means of communication by:
    1. creating work which exemplifies an ethically evaluative opinion.
    2. selecting an event and photographing the various stages during the event which are photographically driven.
    3. creating a serial - sequential set of images depicting a story or documentarian narrative about a type of community.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
