Course Description
This is a course for students to explore on both an individual and group basis the utilization of photographic lighting equipment and techniques for portrait photography. The emphasis will be a "hands on" approach working with other students, models and potential clients in portrait situations. Students will develop basic lighting skills and practice in the production of studio portraits. Students will examine various methods of photographing individuals and groups of people in a studio environment and how photographic styles have expanded the visual syntax in all visual forms of expression and communication in cultures throughout the world.Course may be taken up to three times for credit.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
  1. The student, after preliminary evaluation, will execute the portrait lighting techniques and their application for enhanced composition by:
    1. identifying the various controls for adjusting the quality of illumination suited for desired atmosphere.
    2. recognizing both posing of subject matter and negative space in relation to camera position.
  2. The student will utilize different types of lighting equipment and placement for effective portraitures by:
    1. recognizing the type of lighting equipment which serves both for the type of studio environment and the subject matter.
    2. identifying the various methods of lighting placement which accommodates both studio space and the subject matter.
  3. The student will demonstrate how lighting ratios and the quantity of lights impact the visual perception of the subject matter by:
    1. identifying the various lighting ratios by the intensity of light control.
    2. recognizing the number of light sources suited for both studio environment and subject matter.
  4. The student will differentiate between flash and ambient illumination and their impact on the subject matter by:
    1. recognizing effective use of both flash and ambient applications for on-location environment.
    2. identifying the differences between the quality of flash used and ambient lighting for the appearance of the subject matter.
  5. The student will demonstrate a proficiency in postproduction specific to portraiture by:
    1. producing portraits that use the appropriate amount of skin retouching.
    2. creating examples in class that change background color, clothing colors and remove objects from background.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
