Course Description
Using the scientific method, critical thinking skills, data analysis, this course will examine the fundamental processes of the earth system, composed of an atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, biosphere, and exosphere, through time. The course will also explore interactions between these spheres, including critical analysis of scientific theories and emphasize earth’s connections with humans. State Core Course Description (State Rule 6A-14.0303). This course is taught in a “C” format with 2 hours of lecture and 1 hour of lab. This course satisfies the Natural Sciences General Education Core. (Note credit is not given for both ESC 1000C and ESC 1000/L).
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- *Students will use critical thinking to recognize the rigorous standards of scientific theories by:
- describing the steps and principles involved in the scientific method.
- evaluating different methods of measurement of natural phenomena.
- *Students will analyze and synthesize earth science data to draw scientifically valid conclusions by:
- identifying rocks and minerals and their properties.
- reading and interpreting topographic and geologic maps.
- defining the processes that shape the Earth’s surface.
- explaining the ways in which geologic materials are dated.
- defining the nature of sea water with respect to its chemistry and motion within the ocean basins of the Earth.
- describing the structure of our solar system.
- explaining the nature of the Earth Moon system
- *Students will recognize the different time scales associated with different earth processes by:
- evaluating the theoretical causes of major evolutionary and extinction events.
- distinguishing mountain building, rifting and other events with respect to the forces that produced them.
- memorizing the geologic time scale and placing events in their proper place on this scale.
- charting the origin of the universe and our solar system.
- *Students will effectively describe interactions between humans and the earth’s spheres by:
- comparing and contrasting different types of marine life relative to each other.
- analyzing the different features on the ocean floor.
- analyzing the history of astronomical thought.
- *Students will apply their understanding of earth science principles to complex global and local issues by:
- explaining the different ways in which the atmosphere is measured.
- labeling and describing components of weather maps.
- recognizing how Earth's climate system functions and changes.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
