Course Description

In this course, students will gain an understanding of the basic sociological concepts and vocabulary, including the methodological tools, sociological perspectives, and scientific procedures used by social scientists to collect data and conduct research. Topics generally include: society and culture, institutions, socialization, influences, crime, change, groups, sex, race and ethnicity, family, class, and population. State Core Course Description (State Rule 6A-14.0303). This course partially satisfies the writing requirements outlined in the General Education Requirements. Note: Effective Fall 2024 SYG 2000 will NOT satisfy the General Education Social Sciences core requirement. Students who have successfully completed SYG 2000 prior to Fall 2024 will satisfy the Social Science core. If completed Fall 2024 or later, the course will satisfy the Social Sciences Elective Requirement.   

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. *Students will apply multiple sociological perspectives.
  2. *Students will identify methodological tools used to evaluate sociological research questions.
  3. *Students will understand dynamics between individual agency and social influences.
  4. Students will describe the historical roots of the science of sociology by:
    1. recalling the historical details leading to the formation and development of Sociology.
    2. identifying major theorists and theories from the 1800’s to the present.
    3. defining key concepts in Sociology.
  5. Students will identify cultural, ethnic, and social diversity as applied to human groups, behavior, thought, and emotion by:
    1. determining commonalities and variations in human functioning.
    2. describing the impact of ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and socioeconomic status.
  6. Students will illustrate research, written communication, use of APA, and critical thinking skills by:
    1. utilizing credible sources, such as peer-reviewed academic journals, primary sources, or sources from academic databases.
    2. applying thoroughness of thought to the academic writing process, including substantiating assertions and integrating higher-order thinking.
    3. applying experience through service learning, team collaboration, civic engagement and/or independent writing.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
