PHI 1010 - Introduction to Philosophy

Course Description
In this course, students will be introduced to the nature of philosophy, philosophical thinking, major intellectual movements in the history of philosophy, including topics from the western philosophical tradition, and various problems in philosophy. Students will strengthen their intellectual skills, become more effective learners, and develop broad foundational knowledge. State Core Course Description (State Rule 6A-14.0303). Students will employ critical analysis, examination, and evaluation of arguments, issues, and ideas central to philosophy. Students will use discussion and debate concerning approaches to a variety of philosophical problems. This course satisfies the Humanities General Education Core, and FL state transfer requirements. This course partially satisfies the writing requirements outlined in the General Education Requirements. Credit is not given for both PHI 1010H and PHI 1010 as these courses are equivalent.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- *Students will develop critical thinking skills.
- *Students will demonstrate an understanding of classical western philosophical views.
- *Students will analyze, explain, and evaluate foundational concepts of epistemology, metaphysics, and ethics.
- Students will describe the history of philosophy by examining the ideas and concepts of significant thinkers and the development of philosophy from classical to contemporary thought by:
- identifying the vocabulary, philosophers, and the ideas and concepts in the history of philosophy.
- explaining the central concepts and resulting world-views in the history of philosophy, such as the nature of knowledge, reality, truth, virtue, justice, and other areas of philosophical inquiry.
- Students will apply critical analysis through first examining and then evaluating the arguments, issues, and ideas central to philosophy by discussing and debating approaches to a variety of philosophical problems and worldviews by:
- critically examining arguments, issues, and ideas central to philosophy.
- evaluating philosophical arguments for their strengths and weaknesses using logical reasoning and other appeals to reason and/or human experience.
- Students will distinguish the classical contributions to philosophical literature using primary and secondary sources by:
- identifying specific contributions to each of the major philosophical traditions.
- analyzing representative selections from traditionally accepted philosophical classics.
- examining philosophical ideas through discussion, expository writing, and/or written research.
