ECO 2013 - Principles of Macroeconomics

Course Description

In this course, students will learn the foundations of macroeconomics as the branch of economics concerned with how decision-making, in an environment of scarcity, maps onto the aggregate economy. Students will examine theories and evidence related to the following core set of topics: national income determination, money, monetary and fiscal policy, macroeconomic conditions, international trade and the balance of payments, and economic growth and development. State Core Course Description (State Rule 6A-14.0303). This course partially satisfies the writing requirements outlined in the General Education Requirements. This course satisfies the Social and Behavioral Sciences General Education Core. Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. *Students will recognize that all decisions happen in an environment of scarcity.
  2. *Students will examine theories and evidence regarding how changes in aggregate measurements are related to economic performance.
  3. *Students will recognize the relationships between the components of the national income accounts.
  4. *Students will analyze theory and evidence regarding fiscal and monetary policies and how they affect the economy.
  5. *Students will identify theories of long-term economic growth and examine evidence for those theories.
  6. The student will demonstrate knowledge of personal financial planning by:
    1. identifying short-term and long-term personal financial goals.
    2. identifying anticipated and preparing for unanticipated income and expenses.
    3. examining components and purposes of a personal net worth statement.
    4. describing a personal budget.
    5. explaining how economics influences a personal financial plan.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
