Course Description

This calculus-based course serves as the first in a two-part series, covering topics like kinematics, dynamics, energy, momentum, rotational motion, fluid dynamics, oscillatory motion, and waves. Designed for science and engineering majors, the course integrates critical thinking, analytical skills, and real-world applications. State Core Course Description (State Rule 6A-14.0303). This course satisfies the Natural Sciences General Education Core. Credit is not given for both PHY 2048H and PHY 2048.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. *Students will solve analytical problems describing different types of motion, including translational, rotational, and simple harmonic motion.
  2. *Students will apply Newton's Laws, and conservation laws to solve analytical problems of mechanics.
  3. *Students will identify and analyze relevant information presented in various formats such as graphs, tables, diagrams, and/or mathematical formulations.
  4. *Students will solve real-world problems using critical thinking skills and knowledge developed from this course.
  5. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the concepts of energy and momentum and will apply the related conservation principles by:
    1. relating work, energy and force.
    2. calculating potential energy in the gravitational field.
    3. describing Hooke's law and calculating the potential energy of the spring.
    4. relating the work done by forces to the change in the kinetic energy.
    5. relating power to the rate of doing work.
    6. describing the principle of the conservation of mechanical energy.
    7. defining momentum.
    8. explaining the principle of the conservation of momentum and applying the principle to elastic and inelastic collisions.
    9. explaining the principle of the conservation of angular momentum.
  6. The student will demonstrate an understanding of heat and related energy concepts by:
    1. relating heat to energy.
    2. defining specific heat, heat of fusion and heat of vaporization. (If time permits)
  7. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the two conditions required for equilibrium by:
    1. listing and applying the two conditions required for equilibrium.
    2. stating Newton's laws of motion and giving examples of each.
    3. defining the torque about an axis.
*Major Learning Outcome is set by and in compliance with DOE State Rule 6A-14.0303.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual classroom instructors.
