Course Description

This course is the first in a two-part series intended for non-physics majors, offering an algebra and trigonometry approach to topics such as kinematics, dynamics, energy, momentum, rotational motion, fluid dynamics, oscillatory motion, and waves. The course fosters analytical and critical thinking skills to promote a scientific understanding of the real world. State Core Course Description (State Rule 6A-14.0303). This course satisfies the Natural Sciences General Education Core. (Credit is not given for both PHY 1053 and PHY 1053H.)

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. *Students will solve analytical problems describing different types of motion, including translational, rotational, and simple harmonic motion using algebra and trigonometry.
  2. *Students will apply Newton's Laws, and conservation laws by using algebra and trigonometry to solve analytical problems of mechanics.
  3. *Students will identify and analyze relevant information presented in various formats such as graphs, tables, diagrams, and/or mathematical formulations.
  4. *Students will solve real world problems using critical thinking skills and knowledge developed from this course.
  5. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the basic vocabulary for this first course in General Physics by defining such terms and concepts as: force, mass, inertia, energy, friction, momentum, torque, conservation of momentum and energy, pressure.
  6. The student will demonstrate an understanding of energy and momentum and will apply these concepts by describing the behavior of systems of particles by:
    1. solving problems involving work, energy, and power, including the conservation of energy principle, in which one form of energy decreases while another form increases.
    2. using Hooke's law and energy concepts to simple harmonic motion.
    3. using the concept of conservation of both linear and angular momentum.
    4. solving problems involving gravitational potential energy, elastic potential, translational kinetic energy, rotational kinetic energy, and work done by applied forces.
  7. The student will demonstrate an understanding of gravitational, circular, angular and simple harmonic forces and apply these concepts to example real-world problems.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
