Course Description
This course focuses on statistical analyses, peer reviewed research databases, understanding systematic and meta-analysis reviews, and evidence based research in the current respiratory care literature, evidence based medicine and integrating evidence based research into practice as a respiratory therapist and health services administrator will be emphasized.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will explain the application of evidence based medicine to Respiratory Care practice by
- defining the guiding principles of evidence based medicine.
- distinguishing between the levels of evidence in the Garrard method.
- explaining how evidence based medicine is incorporated into clinical practice.
- The student will describe approaches to finding and integrating best evidence into Respiratory Care Practice by
- identifying appropriate sources of evidence for respiratory care practice.
- distinguishing between peer reviewed evidence based research and non-validated or proprietary research.
- identifying the components that differentiate a systematic review from a meta-analysis.
- describing the steps for conducting a systematic review from a meta-analysis using the Garrard method.
- explaining the process for incorporating research evidence into clinical practice.
- The student will analyze the disparities between existing evidence based research and current clinical practice in Respiratory Care by
- assessing the AARC clinical practices guidelines for content scope validity.
- evaluating the literature used to support AARC Clinical Practice Guidelines.
- demonstrating the use of evidence based literature to support and defend modification to the AARC Clinical Practice Guidelines.
- The student will interpret basic statistical analyses found in the Respiratory Care literature by
- defining types of statistical analyses and metrics used in evidence based medicine.
- differentiating between various measures of validity and reliability.
- identifying the appropriate level of statistical analysis given the variables and methodology.
- The student will demonstrate the ability to critically analyze evidence based literature by
- evaluating peer review articles to determine their clinical relevance and application to respiratory care practice.
- applying evidence based research methodology to identify appropriate sources for guiding clinical decision making.
- differentiating between poorly designed and effectively designed research studies.
- discussing the implications of research on current clinical practice in respiratory care.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the stated objectives through classroom measures developed by the infividual course instructors.
