Course Description
Using the scientific method, critical thinking skills, and data analysis, this course will examine the fundamental processes of the earth's system, composed of an atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere, biosphere, and exosphere through time. The course will also explore interactions between these spheres, including critical analysis of scientific theories and emphasize lithospheric connections with humanity. State Core Course Description (State Rule 6A-14.0303). Note: Effective Fall 2024 and forward, students who successfully complete GLY 2010 will satisfy the Natural Sciences Core requirement. If completed prior to Fall 2024, the course will satisfy the Natural Sciences Elective requirement.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- *Students will use critical thinking to recognize the rigorous standards of scientific theory by:
- explaining the difference between a hypothesis, theory, and law.
- describing the iterative nature of the scientific method.
- evaluating the evidence for the foundational theories of the science of geology.
- *Students will analyze and synthesize geoscience data to draw scientifically valid conclusions by:
- describing the geologic features and processes at the different plate tectonic boundaries.
- examining seismic data to determine the location and energy release of an earthquake.
- describing the different mechanisms for moving a tectonic plate.
- discussing the various lines of data that support both plate tectonics and continental drift.
- identifying rocks and minerals and explaining how they are used to interpret events.
- *Students will recognize the different time scales associated with different geologic processes by:
- listing the principles of relative dating.
- calculating the age of a rock using the principles of absolute dating.
- describing how different landforms develop through time.
- *Students will describe interactions between humans and earth’s spheres by:
- identifying different forms of mass wasting.
- explaining the importance and sources of minerals and other geological resources.
- explaining the dangers associated with volcanoes, earthquakes, and other geological hazards.
- discussing how geological processes like erosion can affect human populations.
- *Students will apply their understanding of geologic principles to complex issues by:
- discussing the evidence for human induced climate change within the context of geologic history.
- distinguishing between different approaches and methods to mitigate the effects of beach erosion and other geologic hazards.
- detailing the issues surrounding the extraction of groundwater from various environments, including karst topography.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of this course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual classroom instructors.
