Course Description
The social institution of marriage and family serves as a basic unit of social structure. This course deals with the following topics: human sexuality, pair relationships, love, communication, the dynamics of marital interaction, and established lifestyles. This course focuses on paired relationships and family relationships over the lifespan.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will recognize human sexuality as an integral part of everyone by:
- describing male and female sexual response.
- identifying stages and reactions to pregnancy and childbirth.
- listing methods of contraception.
- identifying types of venereal diseases and their progressive stages.
- The student will analyze the nature of human love by:
- distinguishing major theories and models of love relationships.
- comparing the physical and psychological factors inherent in love.
- The student will examine the origins and functions of the American family by:
- distinguishing social changes that have affected the American family and the various forms it has taken.
- explaining the functions of the family in the provision of affection, security, and support for its members.
- investigating current pressures and problems affecting the American family and its individual members.
- The student will assess contemporary American lifestyles in a changing society by:
- describing established American lifestyles.
- distinguishing various dynamics of paired relationships.
- identifying possible strengths and weaknesses inherent in paired relationships
- The student will critique effective communication skills necessary for healthy couple and family relationships by:
- explaining the stages and elements involved in the process of communication.
- determining skills and techniques that may be adopted for successful communication.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
