Course Description

Strategic communication is crucial within the professional context of organizations. Examining organizational, behavioral, and technical aspects in the workplace gives students the opportunity to utilize communication principles and techniques. Emphasis in this course is placed on the application of theory, development, and practice of communication skills. These skills include communication strategies; interpersonal communication and organizational context; team and leadership communication; social media protocol; and effective proposals and presentations. (Note: Credit is only given for GEB 3213 or COM 3120.)

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will examine the use of effective communication in business settings by:
    1. Identifying the elements of strategic business communication.
    2. Investigating the importance of establishing credibility.
    3. Exploring intercultural effectiveness and diversity in the workplace.
  2. The student will diagnose their own role of personality and communication skills in the workplace by:
    1. Evaluating the communication strengths and weaknesses of self, including listening skills and perception.
    2. Distinguishing the roles of personality and emotional intelligence in effective business communication.
  3. The student will validate how electronic communication can enhance the collaboration and communication in an organization by:
    1. Explaining the dynamics of participating in and conducting electronic meetings.
    2. Determining strategies for problem-solving in online meetings.
  4. The student will determine team and leadership skills in group settings by:
    1. Investigating effective team roles and hindrances in a group setting.
    2. Assessing effective leadership skills.
  5. The student will design strategic business communications that promote a highly professional image by:
    1. Formulating messages to frame images for specific business situations.
    2. Creating oral presentations and written reports that communicate values in the workplace.
  6. The student will cultivate social media protocols by:
    1. Evaluating the importance of social media in a business situation.
    2. Creating effective social media messages such as blogs, videos, images and other electronic media to portray a professional image.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
