Course Description
This course examines the systematic approaches to managing all activities involved in moving materials, products, services, and information from point of origin to point of use. Students will learn to make improved business logistics and supply chain management decisions through the practical application of multiple analytic techniques used by managers in the field. Emphasis is placed on transportation systems, inventory analysis and management, and warehouse operations. As part of this course, students have the opportunity to pursue up to 3 SCPro Fundamentals industry certifications endorsed by the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP).
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will explain warehouse and materials handling by:
- Evaluating the reasons for maintaining warehouse operations.
- Assessing the elements that influence space layout in warehousing (e.g. productivity, damage, safety, security, etc.).
- Discussing the functions of warehouses.
- Creating a cost-benefit analysis.
- The student will describe various services in the transportation industry and how these services are coordinated by:
- Assessing the importance of the transportation system.
- Discussing the scope of the domestic and global transportation system.
- Identifying common transportation documents.
- Critiquing the various services in the transportation industry and how these services are coordinated.
- The student will identify the multiple processes for inventory analysis and supply planning by:
- Recognizing the importance of inventory.
- Analyzing just-in-time (JIT) inventory process.
- Assessing the use and output of a material requirement planning (MRP) system.
- Analyzing types of inventory management tools and their impact on logistics.
Criteria Performance Standard
Must achieve at least a C.
