Course Description

In this course, students will utilize descriptive and inferential statistical methods in contextual situations, using technology as appropriate. The course is designed to increase problem-solving abilities and data interpretation through practical applications of statistical concepts. This course is appropriate for students in a wide range of disciplines and programs. State Core Course Description (State Rule 6A-14.0303). The course also includes data-driven decision-making and communication of statistical results of the included topics. This course satisfies the Mathematics General Education Core. (Note: Credit is only given for STA 2023 or STA 2023H, but not both.)

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. *Students will visualize and summarize data using descriptive statistics by:
    1. developing basic statistical literacy.
    2. using samples to make inferences about populations.
    3. identifying the most commonly used data collection techniques and sampling methods.
    4. constructing and interpreting graphical displays of data.
    5. calculating and interpreting measures of central tendency, dispersion, and relative standing.
  2. *Students will apply basic probability concepts to draw reasonable conclusions.
  3. *Students will employ concepts of random variables, sampling distributions, and central limit theorem to analyze and interpret representations of data by:
    1. identifying a random variable as being discrete or continuous.
    2. calculating probabilities of given events which follow binomial and normal distributions.
    3. applying the Central Limit Theorem.
  4. *Students will choose an appropriate method of inferential statistics, including confidence intervals and hypothesis testing, to make broader decisions based on sample data.
  5. *Students will model linear relationships between quantitative variables using correlation and linear regression by:
    1. constructing and interpreting scatterplots.
    2. computing and interpreting the least squares regression equation, the Pearson product moment correlation coefficient and the coefficient of determination.
    3. using a linear regression equation to appropriately predict the value of a response variable.
  6. Students will apply basic principles of nonparametric tests by:
    1. recognizing the conditions for appropriate usage.
    2. conducting a hypothesis test.
  7. Students will synthesize and apply concepts to make data driven decisions by:
    1. collaborating on service projects to analyze existing data for different disciplines or departments.
    2. conducting research based on data collection, data analysis and interpreting of results with respect to the initial hypothesis.
  8. Students will communicate statistical results by:
    1. writing technical reports of statistical results and interpretations.
    2. making oral presentations of statistical results and interpretations.
*Major Learning Outcome is set by and in compliance with DOE State Rule 6A-14.0303.

Criteria Performance Standard

The student will have to successfully complete 70% of these objectives on written tests, projects, portfolios and presentations in order to pass the course with a grade of C or better. When presented with a univariate decision-making problem regarding the mean, the student will be able to employ the appropriate hypothesis test with 70% accuracy (use of technology is permitted). Upon completion, the student will be able to explain his/her conclusion with 70% accuracy. Accuracy of values to at least two decimal places is expected.
