Course Description

This is a course designed to introduce the student to various local area network (LAN) concepts and wide area network (WAN) technologies. Major topics include network architecture, media, operations and devices, security, troubleshooting, and industry standards & practices. This course also helps students master the skills and knowledge needed to sit for the CompTIA Network + certification exam.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will demonstrate the basic elements of network communication by:
    1. explaining the functions and applications of various network devices.
    2. comparing and contrasting the use of networking services and applications.
    3. installing and configuring various networking services and applications.
    4. differentiating between common network types and topologies.
    5. comparing and contrasting technologies that support cloud and virtualization.
  2. The student will explain how communication occurs on a network by:
    1. summarizing the importance of implementing network segmentation.
    2. defining the elements of an Internet Protocol (IP) address and subnet mask.
    3. implementing and configuring the appropriate addressing scheme based on a given scenario.
    4. describing the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) address assignment process.
    5. installing and configuring a wireless local area network (LAN) and implementing the appropriate technologies in support of wireless capabilities.
  3. The student will apply industry standards, practices and network theory by:
    1. implementing a basic network based on a given set of requirements.
    2. identifying the correct ports and protocols for a given scenario.
    3. installing and configuring equipment using best practices.
    4. configuring ports and applying protocols as specified.
  4. The student will demonstrate network security theory and best practices by:
    1. comparing and contrasting common network vulnerabilities and threats.
    2. implementing physical security controls.
    3. implementing network hardening techniques.
    4. configuring a basic endpoint firewall.
  5. The student will demonstrate basic network troubleshooting skills by:
    1. synthesizing information in order to implement a specific network troubleshooting methodology.
    2. analyzing and interpreting the output of troubleshooting tools.
    3. evaluating and resolving common wired and wireless issues.
    4. evaluating and resolving common security issues.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will, with minimum 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the stated major learning objectives through classroom measures developed by the individual course instructors and/or by passing the CompTIA Network+ certification exam.
