Course Description

This course focuses on cultural humility and its impact on safe and equitable healthcare delivery at the individual, community and system levels. The concepts of diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility and belonging will be explored and connected to culturally congruent care.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. MLO 1: The student will develop a plan of self-care to promote cultural humility.
  2. MLO 2: The student will construct a plan of nursing care reflective of cultural congruence.
  3. MLO 3: The student will analyze the impact of culture on the evolution of healthcare delivery systems.
  4. MLO 4: The student will determine the nursing role in promotion of health equity across the lifespan.
    THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED WITH A MODULAR BASED CURRICULUM. BELOW ARE THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES OF EACH MODULE.
  5. MODULE 1: Culturally Congruent Care:
    1. analyze implicit bias and its effect on nursing care.
    2. explain the terms multiculturalism, ethnocentrism, cultural imposition, prejudice, and discrimination.
    3. compare the concepts of cultural congruence with cultural humility.
    4. assess self-care strategies used to promote cultural humility.

  6. MODULE 2: Healing and Health Belief Systems:
    1. examine the meaning of culture and its relationship to nursing practice.
    2. explain the foundations of transcultural nursing.
    3. analyze the characteristics of major health belief systems.

  7. MODULE 3: Religion, Spirituality, and Nursing:
    1. illustrate examples of the influence of religion and spirituality on health beliefs.
    2. perform a spiritual assessment on a client.
    3. describe how one can take a client’s religious beliefs into account when delivering care.

  8. MODULE 4: Healthcare Disparities:
    1. analyze culture-based healthcare disparities in the United States.
    2. develop ways for nurses to reduce health disparities for clients with cultural needs.

    1. analyze the cultural diversity of the nursing profession in the United States.
    2. contrast the cultural diversity in the nursing workplace with other professions.
    3. describe how the baccalaureate-prepared nurse can support diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in the workplace.

  10. MODULE 6: Promoting Cultural Congruence in Healthcare:
    1. explain the American Nurses Association’s standard for culturally congruent practice.
    2. evaluate tools that measure cultural congruence.
    3. describe the impact of culture on healthcare delivery systems
    4. devise strategies for healthcare organization to improve cultural congruence of nursing care.

  11. MODULE 7: Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM):
    1. assess CAM techniques currently in use by healthcare providers.
    2. discuss potential safety issues related to the use of CAM.
    3. analyze evidence-based support for CAM practices.
    4. evaluate barriers to CAM from both the client and the healthcare provider prospective.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will demonstrate mastery of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors with a minimum of 70% accuracy.
