Course Description
This course examines informatics and technology use in health care and emphasizes the role of the nurse as an educator for clients and caregivers.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- MLO 1: The student will explain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required for successful use of informatics and technology in the provision of care by the baccalaureate-prepared nurse.
- MLO 2: The student will evaluate legal standards and ethical practices related to health care data and information management.
- MLO 3: The student will apply concepts of informatics and technology to nursing practice, administration, education, research, and health policy.
- MLO 4: The student will synthesize the benefits and risks associated with the use of various implantable and wearable health devices and other emerging or evolving health technologies.
- MLO 5: The student will develop client teaching using various web- and application-based programs.
THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED WITH A MODULAR BASED CURRICULUM. BELOW ARE THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES OF EACH MODULE. - MODULE 1: History and Foundations:
- describe the history, principles, and impact of information technology on health care and nursing.
- explain foundational competencies for health informatics.
- discuss informatics as a specialty within the profession of nursing.
- evaluate the contributions of computer, information, and other sciences to informatics.

- explain the relationship between health informatics and health policy.
- discuss regulation, privacy, and security of healthcare information.
- describe cultural, and ethical, and human factors that impact use of health information technology in practice.

- MODULE 3: Clinical Information Systems:
- describe the role of nursing in the design, selection, implementation, and application of clinical information systems.
- assess impact of a clinical information system on nursing care quality, cost, safety, and outcomes.
- evaluate implications of interoperability of information systems between facilities.
- assess factors that facilitate the use of technology, such as training, support, and compatibility between the new and/or existing systems.
- propose strategies to improve the nurse experience with using clinical information systems.

- MODULE 4: Clinical Judgment, Evidence-Based Practice, Quality and Safety:
- identify best practices for health information technology applications in client care and education.
- explain the relationship between information literacy, clinical judgment, evidence-based practice, and improvements in client outcomes.
- discuss how health information technology improves communication and collaboration within the health care team.
- analyze the relationship between client safety and quality initiatives and health informatics.
- analyze data to inform nursing decisions related to clinical judgment, quality, and safety.

- MODULE 5: Digital Health and the ePatient:
- evaluate components of a personal health record.
- describe telehealth and other electronic and/or Internet-based sources for managing health and education.
- assess Internet-based applications for smartphones for managing health and education.
- synthesize factors related to effective use of wearable and implantable devices rooted in technology for client use.
- identify the role of informatics in promoting the client as a partner in care.
- assess digital health literacy of clients across the lifespan.
- identify best practices for health information technology and communication in client care and education.
- develop a client teaching project for Internet-based delivery related to healthcare technology.

Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will demonstrate mastery of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors with a minimum of 70% accuracy.
