Course Description
This course facilitates socialization into the practice of the professional baccalaureate-prepared nurse via synthesis of concepts, theories, processes, policies, regulations, competencies, and initiatives that affect health.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- MLO 1: The student will evaluate professionalism, advocacy, human dignity, integrity, and social justice as they relate to the practice of a baccalaureate-prepared nurse.
- MLO 2: The student will analyze the role of the baccalaureate-prepared nurse in providing quality, safe care within a changing health care environment.
- MLO 3: The student will discuss various healthcare policy, financial and regulatory issues that affect baccalaureate nursing practice.
- MLO 4: The student will analyze the AACN Baccalaureate Essentials and other competencies as they underscore professional baccalaureate nursing practice.
- MLO 5: The student will create ways to facilitate a healthy nursing work force through self-care, resilience development, and nurse wellness initiatives.
THIS COURSE IS DESIGNED WITH A MODULAR BASED CURRICULUM. BELOW ARE THE LEARNING OBJECTIVES OF EACH MODULE. - MODULE 1: Principles of Professional Nursing:
- describe the purpose of the AACN Essentials for baccalaureate nursing education.
- examine how national accrediting bodies and landmark reports influence nursing practice.
- review ways in which the AACN Essentials represent competencies for baccalaureate level nursing practice.
- distinguish ways in which the AACN Essentials elevates baccalaureate nursing practice.

- analyze national safety and quality standards which guide nursing practice.
- analyze how implicit bias affects quality of care.
- describe the baccalaureate-prepared nurse’s role in improving healthcare quality and safety.

- assess quality improvement tools used in healthcare.
- apply a quality improvement tool to an actual or hypothetical practice change.

- identify nursing theories that help the baccalaureate nurse guide culturally appropriate care in practice.

- assess the baccalaureate-prepared nurse’s role in sustaining a just culture reflecting civility and respect.

- devise strategies to decrease supply costs in the healthcare environment.

Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will demonstrate mastery of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors with a minimum of 70% accuracy.
