Course Description
This course introduces the student to embalming through a study of the history, fundamentals, legal aspects, methods, terminology, sanitation, and preservation of human remains.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the origins of embalming by:
- explaining the contributions and identifying the men responsible for historical embalming theories.
- explaining the development of embalming in the United States.
- listing and describing natural and artificial means of preservation.
- The student will define and use the necessary terminology to facilitate communication with members of allied professions and public by:
- describing terms of embalming.
- discussing the terminology, reasons, and purposes of embalming.
- The student will demonstrate a thorough understanding of the concepts of sanitization, disinfection, and temporary preservation of human remains by:
- defining embalming.
- explaining how embalming process actually occurs with body proteins.
- defining sanitization, disinfection, temporary preservation.
- The student will demonstrate a thorough understanding of environmental and personal health considerations of embalming by:
- listing the personal protective clothing of the embalmer.
- explaining universal precautions.
- identifying risks of infection to the embalmer.
- listing the responsibilities of the embalmer.
- explaining Bloodborne Pathogens Rule.
- discussing acceptable disinfection procedures according to public health guidelines.
- explaining proper disposal of contaminated materials and waste from the embalming process.
- The student will demonstrate a thorough understanding of death, both ante and postmortem physical and chemical changes of the body which affect embalming considerations by:
- explaining key terms associated with death and decomposition.
- listing types, signs, and tests for death.
- explaining ante/postmortem changes of the body.
- listing physical and chemical postmortem changes.
- The student will demonstrate a technical understanding of the preparation room, its design, health and safety standards, equipment, and instruments by:
- explaining OSHA requirements.
- explaining construction materials and design of the preparation room.
- listing equipment needed.
- listing instruments.
- listing accessory materials.
- explaining equipment, instruments, and accessory materials.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the anatomical considerations for embalming by:
- describing anatomical position.
- defining anatomical guide, linear guide, and anatomical limit.
- explaining considerations for selection of arteries.
- explaining considerations, precautions, anatomical guides, linear guide, and anatomical limits for:
- common carotid artery
- facial artery
- brachial artery
- radial artery
- ulnar artery
- axillary artery
- subclavian artery
- brachiocephalic artery
- aorta artery
- common iliac artery
- external and internal iliac arteries
- femoral artery
- popliteal artery

- explaining proper technique for raising vessels.

- The student will explain the pre-embalming procedures by:
- describing necessary legal authorizations for embalming.

- demonstrating posing of the features.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the steps in embalming the normal case by:
- explaining case analysis procedures.
- explaining embalming procedures and techniques.
- explaining post embalming treatments
- explaining terminal disinfection.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
