Course Description

This course assists educators in developing resources to integrate media into instruction. Educators learn how to incorporate the tools available in the 21st century classroom to challenge students, create a hybrid classroom blending traditional classroom techniques and web based tools, and use social networking tools to challenge and inform learners.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The educator will determine how to effectively utilize media for learning by:
    1. identifying the key media categories: text, audio, visuals, animations, and real objects as well as describing how each category relates to learning.
    2. discussing how integrating media into education can engage learners, aid learner retention of knowledge, motivate interest in the subject matter, and illustrate the relevance of key concepts.
    3. describing how their intended media message, intended audience, and other factors such as time and available resources impact the construction and form of the media they create.
    4. using feedback and reflection to improve future integration of media in learning environments.
  2. The educator will demonstrate the importance of proper media literacy when developing resources to integrate media into instruction by:
    1. discussing how a media-literate educator can read (access, analyze, evaluate), write (create), and share media (act) effectively in their learning environment.
    2. designing and implementing instruction for learners who can read (access, analyze, evaluate), write (create), and share media (act) effectively in their learning environment.
    3. evaluating the way individuals, groups, and topics are represented in the media, and determining whether or not they are fairly and accurately portrayed before using them in an educational environment.
    4. discussing how copyright, fair use, and intellectual property are considered with respect to the media that is chosen.
    5. summarizing the social and technological changes in multimedia that influence the current learning environment.
    6. explaining how to recognize false representations of reality in the media.
    7. discussing how the media can influence behavior in a variety of ways.
  3. The educator will create a hybrid classroom model that blends traditional classroom techniques and web based tools by:
    1. integrating 21st century technology tools that allow learners to engage with the content remotely or in person and receive the same effective instruction.
    2. identifying and analyzing technologies for communication and collaboration that can be utilized to enhance learning opportunities inside and outside of the classroom.
    3. describing collaborative social media tools that allow learners to collaborate in a flexible manner with fewer time and space restrictions.
    4. identifying emerging technology tools that assist learners in previewing course material visually.
    5. demonstrating the difference between synchronous and asynchronous learning and providing learners with both types of experiences to build their knowledge.
    6. identifying emerging online assessment tools that can help facilitate timely, useful feedback.
    7. integrating 21st century technology tools that incorporate digital skills and media-literacy concepts to enhance curriculum.
    8. analyzing and evaluating the flipped classroom model as a means of providing opportunities for developing 21st century skills.
    9. analyzing and evaluating the use of play-based learning (simulation, gamification, etc.) as a means of providing opportunities for developing 21st century skills.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
