Admission to Educational Studies and Community Leadership (Bachelor of Science) (EDST-BS) or
Admission to Prekindergarten/Primary Education (age 3 through grade 3) with Infused ESOL and Reading Endorsements (Bachelor of Science) (PKPED-BS)

Course Description

This course is designed to increase the student’s effective use of assessment and evaluation procedures in early childhood care and education settings. The student will review appropriate observation and documentation procedures. Students will also compare, analyze and interpret assessments and results to plan curriculum that is responsive to and supports the development and learning of young children. (Note: This course requires 10 field experience hours in an approved early childhood care and education setting.)

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will evaluate developmentally appropriate observation, documentation and assessment procedures by:
    1. identifying factors that affect observation and assessment.
    2. distinguishing between objective and subjective recordings.
    3. describing the steps to systematic observation.
    4. discussing the major decisions in the assessment cycle.
    5. explaining sources of valid and reliable assessment methods and tools.
    6. identifying appropriate assessment methods and documentation tools to include anecdotal recordings, running records, work samples, checklists and others.
  2. The student will analyze common assessment methods by:
    1. comparing assessment methods and tools.
    2. identifying the strengths and limitations of each method/tool.
    3. examining a child’s progress by completing one appropriate assessment method/tool for each of the major domains of child development (physical development, gross and fine motor development, cognitive development, social and emotional development and the development of language and literacy.)
  3. The student will compile data to write a comprehensive plan for the child’s continuous progress by:
    1. interpreting and evaluating assessment results in the child’s portfolio.
    2. composing a comprehensive developmental summary describing the strengths and challenges of the child based on the assessment results.
  4. The student will determine the legal, ethical and professional responsibilities involved in the observation and assessment of young children by:
    1. examining the laws pertaining to assessment and its use.
    2. connecting the ethical considerations of accuracy, objectivity, confidentiality and absence of bias.
    3. explaining assessment results to students, families and other educators.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
