Course Description
This course introduces future educators to current trends in using technology in contemporary education settings. Provides an overview of the applications of educational technologies used to enhance the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom. Included in this course is an overview of fair use, ethics, and legal issues regarding the use of technologies in the field of education.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will interpret teaching methods associated with 21st Century instructional technologies by:
- describing characteristics of digital media tools used in educational settings.
- providing examples of how technology is changing the way instructors teach and students learn.
- explaining the purposes and appropriate applications of learning management systems, assistive technologies, and differentiated online learning experiences.
- discussing appropriate productivity and presentation software for a variety of educational settings.
- The student will determine ethical responsibilities for using technology in education by:
- researching technological security risks and safeguards in education.
- discussing Fair Use rules of online materials.
- describing ethical considerations for teachers and students.
- The student will distinguish how technology is used in educational assessment by:
- evaluating different educational assessment tools in technology.
- analyzing the benefits and limitations of authentic assessment tools used to evaluate students.
- utilizing technology to create effective rubric templates.
- The student will integrate collaborative technologies that support timely, professional, and cohesive discourse by:
- describing the way traditional and contemporary communication and collaborative tools are used in education.
- reviewing appropriate digital media and collaborative tools used by teachers, students, parents, and administrators in educational settings.
- evaluating administrative software/office applications for use in a variety of educational settings.
- The student will model technology integration with teaching practices by:
- describing ways to integrate traditional and contemporary uses of technology in education.
- creating a fictitious classroom website.
- utilizing various tools to increase communication with students and their families, as well as provide access to online resources that could supplement classroom instruction.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, the student will demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
