Course Description

This course focuses on addressing the issues and strategies of managing the human resource (HR) areas of transnational firms. This will include comprehending local employment laws, adapting HR management practices to local situations, understanding how to effectively recruit, develop and train talent in global enterprises, reviewing performance appraisals and addressing labor relations in multinational organizations.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the role of HR in global organizations by:
    1. examining HR management techniques in global business firms.
    2. contrasting public and nonprofit organizations.
    3. identifying how globalizing organizations affects the HR functions.
  2. The student will identify the overall practices of a global HR department by:
    1. determining how to successfully develop and deliver training programs around the world.
    2. comparing performance evaluation processes among countries.
    3. comparing reward, benefit and compensation practices.
    4. performing job analysis and writing overall job descriptions based on local legal requirements.
  3. The student will develop an understanding of managing international staffing and administration duties by:
    1. comparing effective staffing strategies including using media, recruiters, online recruiting and other methods.
    2. identifying appropriate interviewing techniques.
    3. analyzing processes and procedures for preparing staff for international assignments.
  4. The student will analyze global employee and labor relations practices by:
    1. performing evaluations in the country to determine practical solutions to collective bargaining.
    2. explaining the roles of labor unions and other coalitions in foreign countries.
    3. improving internal employee relations and providing suitable treatment of workers.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
