Course Description

This course is designed to develop the student's Spanish language knowledge and communication skills in the areas of pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and culture. The student will practice listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish at a functional level of fluency and accuracy. (Note: Credit is only given for SPN 1120 or SPN 1120H.)

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will develop listening comprehension in Spanish by:
    1. responding in writing to oral stimuli in Spanish.
    2. responding orally to spoken cues.
    3. engaging in brief exchanges in the target language.
  2. The student will develop proficiency in oral expression in Spanish by:
    1. following basic rules of structure and using correct forms so as to be understood without miscommunications or a breakdown of communication.
    2. repeating and practicing accurate pronunciation of vowels.
  3. The student will develop proficiency in reading Spanish by:
    1. interpreting Spanish texts.
    2. answering reading comprehension questions.
  4. The student will develop proficiency in writing Spanish by:
    1. composing phrases, sentences and paragraphs in Spanish.
    2. practicing accurate spelling, syntax and morphology.
    3. answering questions in writing in Spanish.
  5. The student will broaden awareness of and sensitivity to aspects of Hispanic cultures by:
    1. discussing the cultural concepts as presented in:
      1. the textbook program.
      2. supplemental materials.
      3. information provided by the instructor.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 80% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
