Course Description
This course provides the student with an overview of the influence and impact of culture on health care practices and in the delivery of nursing care for individuals, groups, and communities. The student explores and reflects upon their own personal values and cultural beliefs related to health and health care delivery while examining client behaviors, cultural perspectives, and barriers to transcultural communication. Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will be able to identify relevant factors that influence cultural competence by:
- Analyzing selected theoretical frameworks/models for transcultural nursing.
- Discussing concepts integral to providing culturally competent health care.
- Exploring personal values and cultural biases and their effect on nursing care for culturally diverse clients.
- The student will be able to differentiate major beliefs and value systems of selected cultural groups by:
- Comparing and contrasting the influence of religion and culture on health care, perceptions and practices of individuals, groups, and communities.
- Examining traditional views of health and illness of selected cultural groups.
- Demonstrating a cultural assessment skill.
- Integrating cultural assessment and evidence-based practice to promote culturally competent nursing care.
- The student will be able to explore the influences of cultural diversity within the community by:
- Discussing barriers to communication among clients from diverse cultures.
- Identifying organizational strategies used to promote culturally competent nursing.
- Exploring health disparities among cultural groups in the U.S.
- The student will be able to discriminate global concerns related to achieving culturally competent healthcare by:
- Recognizing cultural barriers, trends, and healthcare issues from a global nursing perspective.
- Describing the future of health care from a global perspective.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
