Course Description
This course provides the student with a supervised, practical learning experience in a work setting that is relevant to his/her program of study. Through course assignments and workplace projects the student will apply, connect, and extend academic theory and competencies for the purpose of building professional skills and affiliations. (Note: This course may be taken up to 6 times for a total of 6 credits.) To view the specific requirements and process to enroll in this course, please see your program’s internship course checklist.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate critical thinking skills in the workplace by:
- applying verbal and written communication skills that demonstrate competent knowledge and assessment of various work-related duties.
- applying a systematic process of communication, problem solving, evaluation, analysis, synthesis, and reflection in the workplace and in related course assignments
- The student will apply ethics and professionalism in the workplace by:
- demonstrating effective work habits such as responsibility, courtesy, and honesty.
- engaging in appropriate professional relationships in the workplace.
- adhering to the policies and procedures used in the workplace.
- The student will apply and extend academic program/course theory and competencies in the workplace by:
- using terminology that is reflective of the assigned industry and/or workplace.
- generating work products that demonstrate synthesis of program/course theory in an applied setting.
- reflecting on how their internship experience and their program course content applies to the work setting.
- The student will be prepared to pursue work in a vocation that relates to academic and professional interests by:
- developing a professional portfolio that will enhance employment opportunities.
- establishing relationships and building a professional network that will serve as references for employment opportunities.
- The student will work with the faculty and site supervisor to identify additional learning goals, objectives and outcomes.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
