Course Description
This course explains and covers crime scene photography skills. Included in the course are camera operation, exposure control, proficiency in relational photos, and flash control for crime scene and evidentiary documentation. The course will also cover unique light sources, the use of filters, specialized equipment, and digital cameras.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate proficiency in the use of manual digital cameras by:
- determining the appropriate type:
- overall-aerial (360°)
- relational
- close-up
- medium
- long- range
- one-to-one
- photographing perishable/fragile evidence.
- performing camera maintenance and troubleshooting.
- The student will demonstrate techniques in the use of the camera to document the crime scene and related evidentiary materials by:
- using external flash photography.
- using a tripod.
- demonstrating special lighting techniques.
- employing specialized light sources with filters.
- The student will document procedures related to crime scene photography by:
- demonstrating the four-corner method of crime scene photography.
- logging manual digital camera settings.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70 percent accuracy, demonstrate achievement of the above objectives through classroom measures developed by individual instructors including multiple-choice objective and short essay tests and mock crime scene exercises.
