Course Description

This course is designed for early childhood educators who care for and work with young children. It examines the range of developmentally appropriate behaviors, the application of consistent limits, the use of supportive communication patterns and styles, and simple rules that clearly define behavioral approaches employed to guide young children in a variety of settings. (Note: Ten (10) hours of field experience in a licensed, professional early childhood care and education setting required.)

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will compare direct and indirect guidance strategies that foster self-regulation in young children by:
    1. defining direct and indirect guidance.
    2. Identifying verbal and affective guidance strategies.
    3. listing guidelines for adult-child ratios, group size, and room arrangement.
    4. identifying appropriate scheduling, transition activities and predictable routines.
  2. The student will develop guidance strategies that support social and emotional development in young children by:
    1. reviewing social-emotional developmental milestones in young children.
    2. defining concepts of self-efficacy and self-esteem.
    3. identifying activities that promote prosocial behavior.
  3. The student will compare guidance strategies that foster integration of young children with special needs within early childhood settings by:
    1. researching pertinent legislation.
    2. listing community resources.
    3. exploring current professional resources related to early care and education of young children with special needs.
    4. reviewing the efficacy of current guidance techniques such as Positive Behavior Support (PBS), Trauma Informed Care and Conscious Discipline.
  4. The student will apply effective strategies that communicate and disseminate information to families regarding positive guidance techniques by:
    1. developing a guide that incorporates methods designed to respect and acknowledge family members' guidance perspectives.
    2. sharing evidence based early childhood strategies that support the development of productive, healthy, and self-sufficient children.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
