Course Description
This course examines disaster planning and emergency management. The course focuses on the four phases of planning, mitigation, response, and preparedness. The course includes FEMA and federal government NIMS ICS-700, and ICS 800 certifications.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will explain risk and critical incidents as they pertain to disaster planning and emergency management by:
- assessing risk for a given incident.
- describing a critical incident. and its components.
- considering the conditions affecting the seriousness of an incident.
- The student will explain how to prepare for critical incidents by:
- describing and listing coping behaviors.
- defining and illustrating duty of care at a critical incident.
- itemizing procedures for minimizing risk at the scene of an incident.
- describing current legislation involving incident response.
- The student will illustrate the responsibilities of an Incident Command System (ICS) by:
- explaining the responsibility associated with each position in ICS.
- clarifying the procedure for transferring command.
- describing the procedure for termination of an ICS.
- drawing a detailed diagram of a typical ICS (ICS Form 201).
- The student will explain the Incident Command System operations at terrorism incidents by:
- describing the procedures for establishing Incident Command at a Terrorism incident.
- developing criteria for defense operations at a terrorism incident.
- establishing perimeter and crime scene control techniques for a terrorism incident.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of this course the student will, with a minimum of 70 percent accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by the individual course instructor.
