Course Description

This course is an examination of strategic planning in public and nonprofit organizations. The student will learn how strategic planning can guide and strengthen the effectiveness of an organizationÂżs performance. The ten step Strategy Change Cycle is introduced as an effective planning approach to accomplish strategic and operational planning in organizations.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. Describe the Strategy Change Cycle as an effective planning approach for public and nonprofit organizations by:
    1. describing the 10 step Strategy Change Cycle.
    2. describing the activities involved in the Strategic Change Cycle process.
    3. discussing the Strategy Change Cycle Process as it is applied to specific circumstances.
    4. describing the role for planners, decision makers, implementers and citizens involved in the Strategy Change Cycle
  2. Analyze the organizational environment to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats by:.
    1. discussing the benefits and guidelines for identifying and clarifying the mandates.
    2. describing the best methods for conducting an external and internal environmental assessment.
    3. describing the process to be utilized when examining the organization’s external and internal environment
  3. Compose a clear and effective organizational vision by:
    1. explaining the desired outcomes and benefits of establishing an effective organizational vision for the future: step eight of the Strategic Change Cycle.
    2. discussing two examples of establishing an effective organizational vision for the future.
    3. describing the process guidelines to be utilized by the strategic planning team when establishing an effective organizational vision for the future.
  4. Prepare a plan for reassessing and revising strategies to enable the survival of the organization by:
    1. explaining the desired outcomes and benefits of reassessing and revising strategies and plans: step ten of the Strategy Change Cycle.
    2. discussing two examples of reassessing and revising strategies and plans.
    3. describing the five types of strategic planning systems.
    4. describing the process guidelines to be utilized by the strategic planning team when reassessing and revising strategies and plans.
