Course Description
This course introduces the student to interprofessional health care delivery. Best practices are emphasized for team formation, effective communication strategies, and patient care processes. Ethical issues related to team management in health care are discussed.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will define interprofessional, team based health care and discuss its importance in the delivery of optimal health care by:
- Identifying critical elements of interprofessional, team based health care
- Explaining the history and rationale for the development of interprofessional health care
- Describing examples of interprofessional health care team initiatives
- Designing a team for the delivery of effective, interprofessional health care
- Discussing the importance of team work and collaboration
- Explaining National Health Initiatives and government agencies impact on team based health care
- The student will explain the ethical theories, philosophy, and professional obligations in the delivery of team based health care by:
- Describing theories of moral development
- Assessing how moral philosophies influence individual thoughts and actions
- Analyzing ethical issues and ethical dilemmas in health care
- Examining obligations of trust and confidentiality
- Evaluating conflict that may exist between professional obligations
- The student will demonstrate professional communication skills that promote effective delivery of team based health care by:
- Describing the elements of effective communication
- Explaining the importance of effective verbal and nonverbal communication
- Discussing the influence of communication on team interactions and collaboration
- Identifying obstacles to effective communication in team based health care
- The student will explain the importance of Best Practices in the delivery of team based health care by:
- Defining Best Practices as they relate to team based health care delivery
- Discussing the role of evidence in the development of Best Practices
- Demonstrating the ability to locate best practice guidelines
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 75% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the course objectives through educational measures developed by individual course instructors.
