Course Description
This course is an introductory study of the factors that affect relations among nations. Through various teaching and learning methodologies, the student will become familiar with the various theories of international relations, the development of nationalism; the elements that determine national power; the formulation of foreign policy; the art of diplomacy; the history and application of international law; international economics; international organizations; militarism and war. The course will cultivate independent scholarship, active learning and enhanced student participation. This course will encourage the use of logical reasoning, in-depth analysis, and critical thinking skills when examining historical and contemporary events in international relations. (Note: This course partially satisfies the writing requirements outlined in the General Education Requirements. Credit is only given for INR 2002H or INR 2002. Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of various theories central to the understanding of international relations as a field of study by:
- defining the mainstream theory of realism.
- outlining the features of the alternative theory of liberalism.
- examining the characteristics of the alternative theory of feminism.
- identifying the aspects of the alternative theory of post-modernism.
- recognizing the open dialogue found in the interdisciplinary aspects of peace studies.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the development of the nation-state system and the elements of power that determine a nation's international effectiveness by:
- explaining the origin of the nation-state.
- distinguishing between "liberal" and "integral" nationalism.
- recognizing the elements of national power and identifying the relationships among them.
- interpreting the symbols of nationalism.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of the theories and practicalities that shape foreign policy and the application of foreign policy through diplomatic conduct by:
- distinguishing between "primary" and "secondary" interests in foreign policy.
- recognizing the role of public opinion in formulation of foreign policy.
- defining the meaning of "power politics."
- identifying the origin and development of diplomacy as method of action.
- recognizing the operation of protocol.
- identifying the art of negotiation
- recalling the functions of a diplomat.
- recognizing the limits of negotiation and diplomacy.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of the historical development of international law and the agencies of its application today by:
- identifying the origins of international law.
- listing the sources of international law.
- outlining the differences between courts of adjudication and arbitration.
- relating the organization of international courts.
- identifying the problems of enforcing international law.
- The student will demonstrate a basic understanding of the operation of international economics by:
- outlining currency and trade policies.
- recognizing international organizations that are economic in nature.
- recognizing the role of "economic imperialism."
- identifying the economic problems and the attempts to solve them.
- relating the inequities of world economics.
- recognizing the realities within underdeveloped countries.
- memorizing the meaning of the terms:

- The student will demonstrate an understanding of international development as it relates to emerging nations in the global economic system by:
- defining the meaning of “development.”
- examining the successes and failures of past experiments in “sustainable development.”
- recognizing the connections between government stability and economic development.
- examining the benefits and costs of foreign investment in emerging nations.
- identifying the sources of global economic assistance.
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of the concerns found in international environmental politics and the aspects of global interdependence by:
- defining global “interdependence.”
- identifying the zones of environmental concern:
- the atmosphere
- biodiversity
- rain forests and oceans
- recognizing the “leverage” of natural resources in the global community.
- examining the connection between the environment and world population trends.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the purpose, objectives and organization of the major international bodies by summarizing the history, organization and objectives of:
- United Nations
- North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
- Warsaw Pact
- European Union (EU)
- Comecon
- The student will demonstrate knowledge of integration in the international system as it relates to regional or global unions by:
- outlining the characteristics of integration theory.
- examining the European Union as an example of integration theory in action.
- recognizing the “power of information” and how it is used as a tool by various actors in the international community.
- exploring the link between the expansion of technology and global cultural integration.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of the causes and effects of war and international conflict by:
- explaining the historic causes of war.
- describing the relationships between war and national interests.
- discussing the development of weaponry.
- outlining the differences between strategy and tactics.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of contemporary international problems based on methods developed in the course by classifying contemporary international situations based upon:
- causes.
- present conditions.
- options.
- The student will demonstrate an increased writing ability by planning and writing one or more of the following (all of which will be evaluated):
- research, analysis, outline, evaluation or other types of papers completed outside of the direct classroom experience.
- research, analysis, outline, journal, evaluation or other types of essays completed during the direct classroom experience.
- any type of expository, evaluative, persuasive or personal response writing as described in the college publication entitled "A Resource Manual for Writing Across the Curriculum."
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
