Admission to Nursing (R.N.) (Associate in Science) (NURSE-AS) and
Pre- or Co-requisite NUR 1083 with a minimum grade of C and
Pre- or Co-requisite NUR 1147 with a minimum grade of C and
(Pre- or Co-requisite PSY 1012 with a minimum grade of C or
Pre- or Co-requisite PSY 1012H with a minimum grade of C)

Course Description

This course focuses on caring for patients with common and uncomplicated physical and mental health problems across the lifespan. Students will apply clinical judgment skills to provide patient-centered care in a variety of settings.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will incorporate patient preferences and values when providing care for diverse patients with common health conditions across the lifespan by:
    1. Communicating effectively with patients and families to determine their preferences and values.
    2. Providing examples of how they incorporated their patient’s preferences and values while providing care in the clinical setting.
    3. Describing how incorporating patient preferences and values affect patient outcomes.
  2. The student will demonstrate basic health assessment and psychomotor skills for patients across the lifespan by:
    1. Completing a health assessment on a patient with a common physical or mental health condition.
    2. Performing common psychomotor skills performed on patients with common physical or mental health conditions.
  3. The student will provide safe and effective nursing care for patients across the lifespan with common physical and mental health conditions by:
    1. Explaining the purpose of the National Patient Safety Goals.
    2. Listing the current National Patient Safety Goals.
    3. Creating and maintaining a safe environment for a patient with a common physical or mental health condition.
  4. The student will apply essential principles to communicate effectively with patients, families, and the healthcare team by:
    1. Describing how they provided therapeutic communication skills when interacting with patients and families.
    2. Demonstrating effective communication skills with patients, families, and the healthcare team.
    3. Using nurse to physician report when speaking with healthcare providers.
    4. Using nurse to nurse report.
    5. Updating clinical instructor and patient nurse on patient status, as necessary.
  5. The student will utilize clinical judgement skills to care for patients across the lifespan experiencing common health conditions in a variety of health care settings by:
    1. Identifying patient cues in patients experiencing common health conditions.
    2. Analyzing patient cues in patients experiencing common health conditions.
    3. Prioritizing hypotheses in patients experiencing common health conditions.
    4. Generating solutions and implementing interventions in patients experiencing common health conditions.
    5. Evaluating outcomes in patients experiencing common health conditions.
  6. The student will adhere to the legal standards and ethical principles of professional nursing while caring for patients across the lifespan by:
    1. Completing online education provided by the assigned clinical agency.
    2. Complying with the clinical agency policies provided in the online education.
    3. Explaining the key concepts of the Florida nurse Practice Act.
    4. Complying with the legal standards in the Florida nurse Practice Act while providing patient care.
    5. Describing the ethical principles of nursing related to caring for patients with common health conditions.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 80% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom/lab/clinical measures developed by individual course instructors.
