Course Description
This course focuses on nursing implications for medications that treat common and uncomplicated physical and mental health problems with an emphasis on medication safety. Students will apply dimensional analysis and math calculations essential for medication administration to patients across the lifespan.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will apply dimensional analysis to perform basic drug dosage calculations by:
- Describing the use of dimensional analysis in the process of dosage calculation.
- Calculating the dosage of parenteral and enteral medications accurately.
- The student will accurately perform weight-based drug dosage calculations for patients across the lifespan by:
- Identifying the need for weight-based calculations accurately.
- Effectively obtaining therapeutic drug dosage information.
- Correctly calculating dosages based on weight.
- The student will explain the nursing implications associated with medications used to treat common health conditions across the lifespan by:
- Listing the drug safety concerns specific to the pediatric, pregnant, and geriatric populations.
- Outlining the mechanism of action of drugs used to treat common health problems.
- Describing the common adverse effects of drugs used to treat common health problems.
- Identifying the appropriate patient teaching required of drugs used to treat common health problems.
- Listing the required nursing interventions performed for drugs used to treat common health problems.
- Identifying the common patient safety concerns for drugs used to treat common health problems.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 80% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom/lab/clinical measures developed by individual course instructors.
