Course Description

This course will provide the student an examination of the services that are provided by a manager of a human resources department. The student will be introduced to the legal issues associated with personnel management, staffing, development, compensation and benefits, and labor relations.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will delineate the functions of a human resources manager by:
    1. analyzing and discussing the purpose of human resources development.
    2. researching the importance of interrelationships as a human resource function.
    3. analyzing and discussing the issues and trends in the field of human resources management.
  2. The student will discuss issues associated with equal employment opportunity and affirmative action by:
    1. describing the major laws affecting equal employment opportunity.
    2. explaining the Uniform Guidelines related to sexual harassment, national origin and religion.
    3. identifying successful affirmative action programs.
  3. The student will analyze recruitment, selection, and training function of Human Resource Management by:
    1. categorizing the sources and methods associated with external recruitment.
    2. explaining the significance of employee selection.
    3. identifying the means by which training and development programs are implemented and evaluated.
  4. The student will analyze performance appraisal and its role within an organization by:
    1. discussing the performance appraisal process.
    2. identifying the aspect of a person’s performance that an organization should evaluate.
    3. researching the legal implications of performance appraisals.
    4. discussing the structure of an acceptable performance appraisal interview.
  5. The student will explain the major categories of compensation and benefits by:
    1. discussing the role of the organization in determining financial compensation.
    2. identifying the form and determination of executive compensation.
    3. analyzing benefits in relation to their importance to compensation.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
