Course Description
This course addresses key management issues as they are applied to global Information Technology (IT) management. This course also addresses strategic Information Technology issues such as management of hardware, software, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), electronic business integration, security and infrastructure support for a variety of industries. The student will be introduced to technology and information systems terminology and will be expected to understand the business implications of Information Technology. Real world examples using case studies, applied exercises, and research assignments will show future managers how Information Technology can be employed to improve organizations. (Note: Credit is only given for ISM 3011 or ISM 4301.)
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- Students will develop organizational strategies that use information systems to create business value by:
- identifying how and why information systems operate.
- utilizing information systems to increase collaboration and communication.
- analyzing how information systems are used to gain competitive advantage.
- Students will distinguish the key elements of information technology (IT) infrastructure by:
- defining how emerging technologies affect IT infrastructure.
- analyzing how enterprise systems support organizational goals and processes.
- identifying the role of database technologies in business intelligence and knowledge management.
- explaining foundational networking and communications concepts and applications.
- Students will examine how information systems are built and managed by:
- formulating a business case for a new information system.
- differentiating various development models.
- explaining how to secure information system resources.
- defining how information systems affect risk.
- Students will analyze ethical and social issues concerning information systems by:
- describing information systems’ social impact.
- identifying privacy issues concerning information systems.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
