Pre- or Co-requisite NUR 1003C with a minimum grade of C and
Pre- or Co-requisite NUR 1147 with a minimum grade of C

Course Description

This course focuses on the transition of the licensed practical nurse to the professional registered nurse, and care coordination with members of the health care team in a variety of settings. Students will be introduced to the importance of quality improvement (QI) and outline the basic skills needed for the Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) and clinical judgement processes.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will outline the basic process of evidence-based practice and quality improvement by:
    1. Describing the evidence-based process.
    2. Explaining the purpose and process of quality improvement in the healthcare setting.
    3. Comparing and contrasting the nursing process with clinical judgement.
  2. The student will describe the role transition to the professional registered nurse, and care coordination with members of the health care team by:
    1. Explaining the role of the professional registered nurse.
    2. Discussing the scope of practice of the professional registered nurse.
    3. Explaining the purpose of the Florida Board of Nursing.
    4. Relating the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics to patient care.
    5. Summarizing the basic ethical and legal implications for the professional registered nurse.
    6. Explaining the importance of the Florida nursing Practice Act in promoting patient safety.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 80% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom/lab/clinical measures developed by individual course instructors.
