Course Description
This course focuses on providing safe, evidence-based care for patients with complex physical and mental health problems across the lifespan. Students will use clinical judgment skills to provide collaborative, patient-centered care in a variety of settings.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will incorporate patient preferences and values when providing compassionate care for diverse patients with complex health conditions across the lifespan by:
- implementing therapeutic communication techniques with patients and families to discern preferences and values.
- proving examples of how they implemented therapeutic communication techniques when speaking with patients and families.
- explaining how patient's and family members' preferences and values are incorporated while providing care in the clinical setting.
- evaluating the effectiveness of their patient-specific interventions in promoting favorable patient outcomes.
- The student will prioritize safe and effective nursing care for patients with complex physical and mental health conditions across the lifespan by:
- demonstrating a health assessment on a patient with a complex physical or mental health condition.
- demonstrating common psychomotor skills performed on patients with common physical or mental health conditions.
- providing and maintaining a safe environment for a patient with a complex physical or mental health condition.
- incorporating QSEN (Quality and Safety Education for Nurses) competencies in the care of their patient.
- The student will coordinate patient care with members of the interprofessional healthcare team to ensure safe and effective care by:
- providing SBAR (situation, background, assessment, recommendation) communication when speaking with members of the healthcare team.
- incorporating IPASS the BATON (introduction, patient, assessment, situation, safety, background, actions, timing, ownership, next) communication when giving nurse to nurse report.
- contacting members of the healthcare team appropriately.
- maintaining communication with clinical instructor and nurse of patient status.
- The student will utilize current evidence to make safe and appropriate clinical judgments for patients experiencing complex health conditions in a variety of health care settings by:
- identifying patient cues in patients experiencing complex health conditions.
- analyzing patient cues in patients experiencing complex health conditions.
- prioritizing hypotheses in patients experiencing complex health conditions.
- generating solutions and implementing interventions in patients experiencing complex health conditions.
- evaluating outcomes in patients experiencing complex health conditions.
- The student will integrate the legal standards and ethical principles of professional nursing while caring for patients across the lifespan by:
- illustrating the use of key concepts of the Florida Nurse Practice Act, in patient care.
- describing the ethical principles of nursing related to caring for patients with complex health conditions.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 80% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom/lab/clinical measures developed by individual course instructors.
