Course Description
This course introduces the student to the concepts of pharmacology and basic medication administration with a focus on safety. Students will be introduced to dimensional analysis and basic math calculations essential to nursing practice. Common drugs used for adult care to meet basic needs will be discussed.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will identify the basic concepts of pharmacology and pharmacological principles by:
- Defining the process of pharmacodynamics and pharmacotherapeutics.
- Explaining the steps and components of pharmacokinetics.
- Describing how different human characteristics can affect pharmacokinetics.
- The student will apply dimensional analysis to perform basic drug dosage calculations for adults by:
- Describing the use of dimensional analysis in the process of dosage calculation.
- Calculating the dosage of parenteral and enteral medications accurately.
- The student will describe the basic medication administration process with a focus on safety by:
- Listing and explaining the steps of safe medication administration.
- Discussing the ethical and legal implications of medication administration.
- Explaining how medications are regulated.
- The student will explain the nursing implications associated with medications used to treat the basic adult patient by:
- Describing the mechanism of action of drugs used to treat the basic adult patient.
- Describing the common adverse effects of drugs used to treat the basic adult patient.
- Identifying the appropriate patient teaching required of drugs used to treat the basic adult patient.
- Listing the required nursing interventions performed for drugs used to treat the basic adult patient.
- Identifying the common patient safety concerns for drugs used to treat the basic adult patient.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 80% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom/lab/clinical measures developed by individual course instructors.
