Course Description
This course introduces students to the nursing program’s philosophy and core organizing concepts, including the role and scope of practice of the professional nurse. Students will learn the basic principles of therapeutic and healthcare team communication and begin to explore the nursing process as the foundation for safe and appropriate clinical judgment.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will describe the basic principles of therapeutic and healthcare team communication by:
- Explaining the function and content of the IPASS the BATON form.
- Creating an effective nurse to nurse report.
- Discussing the elements of professional communication in the health care setting.
- The student will identify the steps of the nursing process as the foundation for clinical judgement by:
- Explaining the steps of the nursing process.
- Comparing and contrasting clinical judgement and critical thinking.
- Describing the connection between the nursing process and the development of clinical judgement.
- The student will explain the role and scope of practice of the professional nurse by:
- Describing the role of the professional nurse.
- Describing the scope of practice of the professional nurse.
- Discussing the purpose of the Florida Board of Nursing.
- Relating the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics.
- Summarizing the basic ethical and legal implications for the professional nurse.
- Stating the importance of the Florida nursing practice act in promoting patient safety.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 80% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom/lab/clinical measures developed by individual course instructors.
