Course Description
This course introduces students to safe, basic adult care, health promotion, and development across the illness-wellness continuum. Students will acquire foundational psychomotor skills, including health assessment, and begin to develop clinical judgment skills in a variety of settings.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will incorporate patient preferences and values when providing health teaching for adults in a variety of health care settings by:
- Explaining how preferences and values influences patient care.
- Describing common cultural differences in healthcare teaching.
- Providing a teaching example that incorporates a patient’s preferences and values.
- The student will perform basic health assessment and psychomotor skills for adults in a variety of health care settings by:
- Completing a basic health assessment on an adult patient.
- Demonstrating common psychomotor skills performed for adult patients.
- Providing and maintaining a safe environment for the adult patient.
- The student will apply essential principles to communicate effectively with patients and nursing staff by:
- Describing the essential principles of communicating effectively with patients and nursing staff.
- Exhibiting effective communication skills while providing patient care.
- Demonstrating effective communication skills while working with clinical instructors and nursing staff.
- The student will utilize clinical judgment skills to promote basic care, comfort, and safety for adults in a variety of health care settings by:
- Describing the process of clinical judgement and critical thinking.
- Accurately decerning priority cues found in the patient history, diagnostic and assessment findings.
- Identifying priority cues to promote basic patient care and comfort needs of the adult patient.
- Appropriately assigning priority assessments based on priority cues, to promote basic care and comfort for the patient.
- Providing and maintaining a safe environment for the adult patient based on priority cues and assessments.
- The student will follow clinical agency policies and established legal standards when providing nursing care by:
- Completing online education provided by the clinical agency assigned.
- Adhering to the clinical agency policies provided in the online education.
- Identifying the function and key concepts of the Florida nursing practice act.
- Adhering to the legal standards in the Florida nursing practice act when providing nursing care.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 80% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom/lab/clinical measures developed by individual course instructors.
