Course Description

Microbiology consists of the study of microorganisms and their role in our environment and health from a cellular and molecular point of view. Topics include microbial cell structure and function, microbial genetics and metabolism, bacterial identification, microbe-host interactions, antimicrobial agents, microbial control, and infectious disease. This course will emphasize the interaction of microorganisms with humans and the diseases they cause. This will enable students to understand disease-causing representatives of different groups of microorganisms and how these are transmitted and controlled. This course is not an acceptable pre-requisite for most professional and graduate programs (e.g. Physician assistant, medical school, etc.).

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will acquire and articulate the various relationships between opportunistic and pathogenic organisms of the human body and describe host-parasite relationships by:
    1. identifying, comparing, and contrasting Procaryotic microbes, Eucaryotic microbes, and subcellular viruses and other agents on the basis of structure and function.
    2. explaining the information flow within a cell and the regulation of cellular metabolism, growth, and reproduction.
    3. explaining the relationships in various ecological situations including normal microbiota, pathogenicity, infection, food intoxications symbiosis, and parasitism.
    4. characterizing, identifying, and classifying selected microorganisms and determining their ability to cause disease in humans.
    5. discussing selected historical events and their relationship to microbiology.
  2. The student will demonstrate proper methods of collection, storage and transport of clinical material for microbiological investigations by:
    1. discussing the reasons and methods for sterilization of equipment and medical preparations from the microbiological point of view.
    2. working individually or in groups to solve case studies or problems related to infectious disease and the concepts of microbial control.
    3. document routes of transmission of infection in hospitals, communities and populations and the methods used to control the spread of infection.
    4. illustrating an understanding of various microbiology lab methods and the importance of proper aseptic techniques in patient management.
    5. demonstrate the contribution of the microbiologist and the microbiology laboratory to the diagnosis of infection including specimen collection and the role of the nurse in carrying this out.
  3. The student will communicate an understanding of immunology and its application in the diagnosis and prevention of infectious diseases by:
    1. evaluating host defense mechanisms in relation to microbial pathogenicity mechanisms.
    2. characterizing the mode of action and side effects of antimicrobial drugs and chemotherapy.
    3. discussing various mechanisms of antibiotic resistance.
    4. describing the principles of vaccine preparation and the use of vaccines in immunization.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of the above stated objectives through classroom measurements developed by individual course instructors.
