Course Description

This course is an introductory leadership course with an emphasis on the traits, values, characteristics, and developmental tasks that are a foundation for leadership. Students will gain a greater sense of self-awareness as a basis for developing personal leadership skills. The course will focus on change, vision, adaptability, and effective communication. Students will be able to identify qualitative and quantitative leadership traits they possess, allowing them to prepare for leadership situations.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will define the term leadership and identify leadership characteristics by:
    1. reviewing the quantitative skill sets of leaders.
    2. describing qualitative traits shared among leaders.
    3. listing the combined quantitative and qualitative traits shared among established leaders in our society and businesses.
  2. The student will identify personal qualitative leadership traits by:
    1. completing self-evaluation tools to assess the student’s qualitative traits.
    2. reflecting on their assessment results by reviewing the current experts’ results.
    3. developing a simple plan of action for setting leadership goals.
    4. defining the roles individual leaders fulfill within an organization.
  3. The student will identify leadership methodologies as a systematic approach to achieving management and business goals by:
    1. reviewing the various leadership and management styles of current and past leaders in history.
    2. defining the different leadership models and styles.
    3. analyzing the various outcomes and effects of a variety of leadership models.
  4. The student will be introduced to diverse solutions in leadership decision-making by:
    1. reviewing the current business culture within organizations.
    2. identifying the challenges that personal cultures and values have on organizational decision-making.
    3. reading value-based leadership cases for achieving organizational change.
    4. defining equity and inclusivity.
  5. The student will review current team leadership concepts by:
    1. participating in team projects that explore real-world dilemmas encountered in organizations.
    2. identifying elements and factors that affect and support team cohesiveness and productivity.
    3. listing concepts leaders utilize to effectively overcome communication obstacles typical in team dynamics.
    4. seeking conflict resolutions though leadership models and practices.
  6. The student will identify the critical communication skills for effective leadership by:
    1. listing the key verbal and non-verbal techniques used in quality communications for leaders.
    2. reviewing the most effective channels for communicating.
    3. discussing crisis, team, and cultural communication challenges leaders face in business today.
    4. designing a simple communication plan for a leader.
  7. The student will define the role of leadership in strategic planning and resource management for achieving organizational goals by:
    1. outlining the roles leaders and managers fulfill within an organization.
    2. reviewing the purpose of the mission and vision for an organization.
    3. listing the action steps to initiate execution of the strategic vision.
    4. evaluating the resources available for achieving goals and developing short and long-term plans.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of this course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
