Course Description
This is the second course in a two-semester sequence of Organic Chemistry. Course material emphasizes the spectroscopy of organic molecules, nomenclature, and the reactions and mechanisms associated with the use or synthesis of carboxylic acids and derivatives thereof, aromatic compounds and substituted derivatives, aldehydes, ketones, amines, alpha-carbon chemistry, and pericyclic reactions.
Course Topics
Spectroscopy
Infrared, and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy
Reactions
Reactions of carboxylic acids, carboxylic acid derivatives, aldehydes, ketones, alpha-carbon chemistry, benzene, substituted benzene derivatives, amines, and pericyclic reactions.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will show mastery of spectroscopic techniques by:
- Describing the theoretical basis of infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
- Correctly selecting a compound that matches an IR, 1H-NMR, and/or 13C-NMR spectrum.
- Identifying the number of, type of, location of, and/or splitting pattern of signals expected for a simple organic compound.
- Correctly taking into account the implications of symmetry as it relates to spectroscopy.
- Utilizing infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to draw the structure of an organic molecule.
- In the context of carboxylic acids, derivatives thereof, substituted benzene, aldehydes, ketones, and amines, the student will apply IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) nomenclature and common or historical names by:
- Drawing a structure of an organic compound given its name.
- Determining the name of an organic compound given its structure.
- The student will show mastery of common organic reactions including the use and/or production of carboxylic acids, carboxylic acid derivatives, aldehydes, ketones, alpha-carbon chemistry, substituted benzenes, and amines by:
- Determining the reactant, reagent, or product given two of the previous.
- Designing a multistep synthesis when provided a starting material and product.
- Designing a multistep synthesis for disubstituted and higher order benzene derivatives utilizing activating and deactivating groups.
- Drawing reaction mechanisms for common organic reactions.
- The student will explore an introduction to the chemistry of pericyclic reactions by:
- Differentiating between different types of pericyclic reactions.
- Applying quantum mechanics and molecular orbital theory to justify the product of a reaction.
- Drawing reaction mechanisms for pericyclic reactions.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors and/or the ACS (American Chemical Society) final exam.
