Course Description

This course is a study of the basic concepts of fire company leadership, including the human skills, leadership tools, problem solving, and goal achievement of a company officer. Emphasis will be placed on the role of the officer in the setting of the fire company.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. The student will analyze the basic concepts of leadership used in problem solving and goal achievement in the fire service by:
    1. identifying the basic human needs.
    2. explaining the continuum of leadership styles.
    3. setting appropriate leadership goals for productivity.
    4. discussing the skill necessary to provide effective leadership.
  2. The student will analyze the relationship and interaction of methods, principles, responsibilities, and goals of effective leadership by:
    1. selecting the appropriate leadership style toward solving a given personnel problem.
    2. explaining the leading/following concepts.
    3. identifying the areas of responsibility of a company officer in training, emergencies, cleaning, and maintenance.
  3. The student will demonstrate the structure of a typical fire company by:
    1. drawing a typical organizational plan for a fire department.
    2. explaining the inter/intra relationships of a company.
    3. identifying the leadership styles needed to lead a company in a given situation.
    4. writing a monthly work schedule for a typical company.
    5. explaining a first alarm in terms of first due, first alarm and multi-company emergencies.

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will, with minimum 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by the individual course instructors.
