Course Description
This course is a study of the basic concepts involved in fire fighting, including the behavior, fire fighting fundamentals and principles of extinguishment; the proper role for a utilization of various fire companies and pre-planning fire problems. This course is required to become eligible to sit for the Florida State Fire Officer certification exam.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will describe the fundamentals of fire ground operation by:
- explaining the four parts of fire ground size-up.
- explaining the fire tetrahedron phenomenon.
- selecting the highest priority when given a fire ground problem.
- listing eight fire fighting tactics.
- The student will demonstrate the operations required in the pre-fire planning function by:
- gathering the pertaining facts for pre-fire planning when given a target hazard.
- drawing a structure to scale when given the information.
- constructing a pre-fire plan using the proper symbols and ten essential features.
- The student will understand the role and the function of various types of fire companies by:
- explaining the operations of an engine company.
- listing ten responsibilities of a truck company.
- identifying the functions of a rescue company.
- The student will demonstrate the considerations imposed on the fire ground by the occupancy by:
- determining the rescue priorities when given an emergency situation.
- placing in proper order the six factor of rescue as applied to different occupancies.
- The student will understand the interaction of fire companies on a fire ground situation by:
- coordinating the first alarm fire companies in a given problem.
- establishing a command post and command organization for a given emergency.
- explaining the criteria for selecting offensive or defensive strategy in a given fire problem.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70 % accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
