Course Description
This course is a study of the guidelines for establishing an occupational safety and health program for a fire department, plus safety procedures for members involved in rescue, fire suppression, and related activities. Emphasis is placed on performance objectives, and not a single correct way to achieve compliance. The guidelines discussed in the course are flexible, so students can customize an occupational safety and health program that will meet their specific needs.
Learning Outcomes and Objectives
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of occupational safety and health organizational considerations by:
- identifying required procedures and policies regarding fire department health and safety.
- explaining required record-keeping as it relates to health and safety issues.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of occupational safety and health training requirements by:
- citing the training requirements for personal protective equipment.
- explaining the training requirements for emergency response to hazardous waste operations.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of occupational safety and health vehicle equipment requirements by:
- describing the elements of a fire department safe driving program.
- identifying the occupational safety and health standards dealing with equipment and machine guarding.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of establishing and meeting medical and physical criteria by:
- citing the requirements regarding fire fighter accident, injury, exposure and medical records.
- describing physical fitness standards, and successful programs aimed at fire fighter wellness.
- The student will demonstrate an understanding of preventing injuries during emergency operations by:
- listing the most common physical hazards found at the fire scene and other workplaces.
- describing the preventive measures needed to eliminate fire fighter injuries and deaths.
Criteria Performance Standard
Upon successful completion of the course the student will, with a minimum 70 percent accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
