Course Description

This course examines the security risks associated with emerging technologies. Using case studies and a seminar format, students will analyze emerging technologies and learn how to identify vulnerabilities and security risks that emerging technologies could introduce into an organization. Students will also explore strategies for evaluating security risk, responding to and for mitigating risk in the context of emerging technologies. Students will create a comprehensive report based on an emerging technology of their choice that will describe associated security risks and provide recommendations for safe deployment of new technology.

Learning Outcomes and Objectives

  1. Students will appraise and evaluate the security implications related to emerging technologies by:
    1. Describing the general security risks associated with emerging technologies presented in the course
    2. Classifying the risk associated with identified emerging technologies
    3. Assessing the severity of risk associated with identified emerging technologies
  2. Students will analyze and recommend procedures for responding to and mitigating risk related to emerging technologies by:
    1. Researching and summarizing best practices for mitigation of security risks
    2. Critiquing best practices for responding to security issues
    3. Evaluating and ranking a set of possible recommendations
  3. Students will be able to create and communicate a plan that will address the risk associated with a specific emerging technology by:
    1. Researching and selecting a currently emerging technology
    2. Analyzing potential security risks associated with the selected emerging technology
    3. Writing a report addressed to senior level management that explains the security risk and includes an implementation plan

Criteria Performance Standard

Upon successful completion of the course, the student will, with a minimum of 70% accuracy, demonstrate mastery of each of the above stated objectives through classroom measures developed by individual course instructors.
